Miran Magnetostrictive Liquid Level Sensor Application Case in Monitoring the Water Level of Groundwater Wells in the Park Landscape
2026-08-21
I. Project Overview
This project is an intelligent transformation of groundwater monitoring wells for the urban park landscape. The park is equipped with multiple landscape groundwater wells (as shown in the figure, the pre-installed well bodies are buried in the park lawn), which are used for landscape water replenishment and dynamic observation of underground water resources. The original monitoring method was: manual regular visits to the wells to measure water levels with tape measures, resulting in data lag, high labor costs, and inability to promptly grasp sudden changes in water levels during rainy seasons or dry periods. Therefore, an automated liquid level monitoring device is urgently needed to achieve 24/7 online collection of water level data and connect to the park's smart water management platform.
The on-site well bodies are PVC pre-installed well shafts, located in an open lawn environment. They are exposed to constant sunlight and rain, with large day-night temperature differences. The water body inside the well contains trace amounts of sediment, which imposes strict requirements on the waterproofing, durability, and measurement stability of the sensors.

II. Project Pain Points
1. Low efficiency of manual inspection: Daily deployment of maintenance personnel to measure water levels at dozens of monitoring wells takes a long time, and in the event of sudden water level surges, timely warnings cannot be provided;
2. Insufficient measurement accuracy: The manual reading of the tape measure has an error of ±1cm to 3cm, which cannot meet the needs of precise water resource statistics;
3. Environmental adaptation challenges: Installation outdoors in an open environment, exposure to rain, humidity, and temperature fluctuations during day and night can lead to frequent malfunctions of ordinary submerged liquid level sensors;
4. Unable to upload data remotely: Lack of digital signals, water level data cannot be integrated into the park's central control system, making it difficult to the start and stop of landscape water pumps.

III. Solution: Select Milang Magnetostrictive Liquid Level (Displacement) Sensor
1. Product Selection
1. Product Selection
The Miran MTL series probe-type magnetostrictive liquid level sensor is adopted. Based on the magnetostrictive non-contact measurement principle, it is combined with anti-corrosion stainless steel measuring rods and matching anti-corrosion float balls. It outputs RS485 digital signals and is suitable for long-term outdoor groundwater well conditions.
2. Installation Plan (Refer to the actual photo)
. Fix the sensor vertically at the center of the PVC well shaft. Three screws limit and fix the sensor body to avoid sensor deviation caused by water body disturbance inside the well;
. The float ball is installed on the stainless steel probe rod, and it rises and falls synchronously with the well water level. It precisely collects the liquid level height through magnetic coupling;
. The signal lines are led out from the well shaft for power supply and communication lines, and connected to the on-site collection terminal. The data is uploaded to the park's smart water management platform through the IoT module;
. An external white PVC protective sleeve is paired with the sensor to isolate grass, mud, and fallen leaves, enhancing the outdoor protection level.

IV. Core Product Advantages
1. Ultra-high measurement accuracy: Full-scale error ≤ 0.05% FS, millimeter-level water level measurement. Compared with manual tape measure, the data stability is enhanced, and subtle fluctuations of groundwater levels can be accurately captured;
2. All-weather outdoor durability: IP68 fully sealed stainless steel body, resistant to moisture, temperature fluctuations, suitable for outdoor grasslands in southern regions in rainy and snowy weather. There is no temperature drift or zero-point drift. Non-contact measurement has no mechanical wear, and the service life can reach 15 years or more;
3. Digital convenient networking: Standard RS485 Modbus-RTU protocol, directly connected to PLC/Internet of Things gateway. Water level data is automatically uploaded to the cloud, and the background automatically generates daily/monthly water level reports. During dry periods, water shortage, and during flood periods, overflow will trigger automatic pop-up warnings;
4. Significant reduction in operation and maintenance costs: After renovation, manual daily inspections are cancelled, only quarterly routine appearance checks are required. The annual manual operation and maintenance cost per well decreases.

V. Project Implementation Outcomes
1. Smart Management: The operation end of the park can remotely and in real-time view the water levels of all wells. Based on the groundwater levels, the landscape water replenishment pumps will automatically start or stop, enabling the park to take water as needed and achieving annual water savings for landscape water replenishment.
2. Water Resources Ledger: Continuous collection of annual groundwater level data forms a dynamic database for the park's groundwater, providing authoritative data support for the park's soil and water conservation and water resource management.
3. Severe Weather Warning: During heavy rain during the flood season, if the water level surges suddenly, real-time alarm information will be sent out, allowing for early preparation for well drainage protection to avoid the risk of water overflow and soaking the lawn.
