Products Description
The MTL4 series magnetostrictive level transmitters operate on the following principle: when two different magnetic fields intersect, a strain pulse signal is generated; by calculating the time taken for this signal to be detected, the precise position is determined. Of these two magnetic fields, one originates from the permanent magnet within the magnetic ring, whilst the other is an excitation pulse generated by electronic components within the sensor’s electronics compartment. The excitation pulse propagates at the speed of sound along a waveguide wire made of magnetostrictive material inside the sensor. When it intersects with the permanent magnetic field within the magnetic ring, the mechanical vibration generated by the waveguide wire forms a strain pulse due to the magnetostrictive effect. The strain pulse is rapidly captured by the detection circuitry within the electronics compartment. The MTL4 magnetostrictive level sensor calculates the change in the magnet’s position by determining the total time elapsed from the generation of the excitation pulse to the detection of the strain pulse, and multiplying this by a fixed value for the speed of sound. This process is continuous and uninterrupted; consequently, whenever the position of the magnetic ring changes, the new position is rapidly detected. As the output signal is a true value rather than a proportional signal or one requiring further amplification, there is no signal drift or variation in value, and unlike other sensors, it does not require periodic recalibration.
